Elusive harbor seals at Graves Light

Jim needed deckhand for for his Friday morning charter out to Graves Light so I offered to jump on and crew.  I don’t really crew much on the Keep-AH anymore; I got burned out for lack of variety in scheduled dive sites and to be honest I’d rather be fun diving instead of teaching/crewing.  Still..I do enjoy diving in Boston Harbor and miss some of the regular customers. He had a customer who just wanted to hire a private guide/DM and also wanted some tips and pointers about their new…

Batman goes scallop diving and finds a torpedo bottle

scallop diving

Although the weather this weekend was not ideal I managed to get out on a scallop charter on Saturday.   With my gear still wet from Scapa Flow I figured another trip into the salt wouldn’t hurt it.  I didn’t bother diving my rebreather mainly out of pure laziness since I didn’t feel like assembling it or filling scrubbers. Honestly sometimes single-tank dives are just easier especially on a 50ft scallop dive with lots of current. Me and Annie went out with Boston Scuba with Kim, Kevin N. and some…

Of wrecks, ledges and botched mooring jobs: City of Salisbury, Jeffrey’s Ledge and the Nina T clusterfuck

I started the weekend a little early by taking a half day on Friday to crew.  We were scheduled to dive Graves Light and the City of Salisbury wreck with a good group of divers from Maine that chartered the boat.    The weather was perfect and I believe this was the first charter that I’ve worked this season that we had a majority of people in wetsuits.  **Brr** Since I’m a “warm water wimp” I stuck to my drysuit. Capt. Chris was running the boat with me as crew…

Diving the wreck of the SS Romance

On Saturday we had great weather and managed to dive the wreck of S.S. Romance.   The S.S. Romance was a passenger steamship that sank in September 9, 1936 approximately a mile north of Graves Light after she was rammed by the vessel S.S. New York in heavy fog. Miraculously all aboard were saved thanks to the quick thinking and professionalism of the captains and crew of both vessels: Captain Adelbert Wickins of the Romance, and Captain Roland Litchfield of the New York (source). Today the S.S. Romance sits in approximately 80′…

Trip Report: Bottle diving, scallop diving & Chester Poling

The weather this weekend turned out better than can be expected for New England winter boat diving.   With the winds blowing for most of the week I did not have high expectations for the conditions but I was pleasantly surprised when the winds finally laid down on Friday and I was greeted with flat and calm seas Saturday morning.   Although I have been diving most weekends in January and February all of these dives have unfortunately been shore dives since pretty much every charter has been blown out this…
