Dive Report: Spooky to Moonscape to Upper Line

Should I Stay Or Should I Go? This is a cross blog post from the Esperanza Mapping Project blog. I was originally not planning on going up to Rutland this weekend however Sunday’s marine forecast took a turn from marginally passable to nasty so I opted to make the 7 hour round-trip drive for a nice fresh water rinse. I somehow convinced myself that the drive was worth it to get the salt off my gear. I’m not quite sure the logic there but I went with it.. I drove…

Lost reel at Esperanza Quarry / True Blue

Since my charter was canceled on 4/22 due to weather I decided to make the best of the weekend and headed up to Vermont and dive with Matt/Lea at Esperanza. They were already planning on going up there anyway but it was sort of a last minute decision for me. Matt/Lea drove up Friday night but I had a bunch of stuff to pack and organize so I drove up Saturday morning at 5AM. We decided to enter and dive from the open water portion instead of the air shaft…

Esperanza / True Blue Quarry Trip Report

I decided to make another weekend out of diving in Vermont and headed back up to Esperanza / True Blue Quarry.   On Friday night I went to ECD’s Diver Social event at Bill’s Bar; I didn’t stay too long since I planned on driving up to Vermont Saturday morning to meet up with my friend Tom H. who was already up there.   Some of the ECD crew were also planning on heading up to True Blue on Sunday morning so I figured I’d meet up with them at…

3 Days Underground at Esperanza / True Blue Quarry

I decided to use the long Thanksgiving weekend as an opportunity to head up to Esperanza / True Blue Quarry to do 3 days of diving with my buddy, Matt H.  His wife/normal dive buddy was visiting family this weekend so it would just be two of us at the mine. The ocean looked pretty bad and the wind and rain forecast this weekend meant that dive boats would probably not be running anyway. Day 1 I drove up Friday morning around 5:30am and met Matt around 9:15am for quick…

Cave diving and drysuit testing at Esperanza

Esperanza Quarry

I made a last minute trip up to Esperanza / True Blue quarry this weekend to dive with my friend Tom H. from Rhode Island.  Tom had already booked a hotel up in West Rutland, VT and was planning on diving rain or shine so I figured he could use the company.  I drove up Friday night and we did two dives Saturday morning.  I was originally supposed to go out with the Daybreaker on Sunday to dive the wreck of the Coyote but strong winds forced pretty much all…

Replacement ladder in the airshaft at Esperanza Quarry

I drove up to the quarry on Tuesday morning to help install the new ladder that Matt H. designed for the airshaft in Esperanza.  Myself, Matt/Lea and Brie were up there the previous weekend and did two dives on Saturday and Sunday mostly on lobster line jumping to shark and moonscape.  I really like the moonscape line.  It was a great weekend and the last one that old rickety ladder would see. We also ran into Heather, Dave, and Scott up there on Sunday. Dave was teaching a Prism2 class…

Impromptu “cave diving” trip to Vermont (Esperanza quarry)

Esperanza Quarry This fall has been not been too kind for New England boat diving. As is the usual for fall the weather and winds can be unpredictable. That makes for a lot of blown out dive charters. So what do you do when you already have a rebreather prepped, packed and a car loaded with bailout bottles and a drysuit? Go cave diving in Vermont, of course. What is better than an impromptu trip up to West Rutland, VT for some “cave” diving at the Esperanza Quarry / True…
