I’ve had a very busy diving summer and unfortunately have not updated this blog that much. I’ll try to backfill a couple trip reports from this year in the Great Lakes. We had an awesome weekend up in Owen Sound, Ontario diving the SS. Manasoo and J.H Jones.
I never get tired of diving the Manasoo. It has become one of my favorite wrecks in Lake Huron. The pilot house and engine room are both fantastic for photos, as is the 1927 Chevy in the cargo hold. It’s an awesome wreck and relatively “close” for me, as in, it’s only 11 hours of driving as opposed to my usually 18-21 hour of driving to I usually do to dive in Lake Huron or Lake Superior.
Not too much to report. We had excellent weather and conditions all 3 days with the exception of a little rain one day. I took more photos of the Manasoo inside the engine room and the 1927 Chevy. The first day I sort of screwed up and left my camera sitting in the hot sun so the housing fogged up a bit so I was not happy with my photos. The next day was overcast and I kept my housing in the shade and had no issues.
We used Greg Hilliard’s charter Fully Tek Charters. I have never been on his larger boat but his smaller boat the Swayze Express is well setup. The deco above 50ft was a pleasant 65 degrees (+18c). We kept our runtimes around 100 minutes which gave us about 35-38 minutes on the bottom which was plenty.
We also did one dive on the J.H Jones. I took a little GoPro video but nothing special. It’s s nice little wreck and definitely worth some dives but the Manasoo is really the star of the show.
Sounds like a great spot to explore. How deep is the wreck? Thanks
Hi Timur, It’s about 200ft (60m). It’s an awesome wreck.
That’s too deep for me, at least for now. I am planning to get going with tech diving classes. Cheers
